Assessment Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Thamesmead SCITT can offer candidates the opportunity to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) via the Assessment Only route; this programme is a 12 week employment based route and we welcome all applications, including those with disabilities and those from ethnic minotrity groups who meet the following criteria:

  • GCSE standard equivalent
    • All candidates must have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade C (4) in GCSE English and mathematics
    • All candidates who intend to teach pupils aged 3 to 11 additionally have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade C (4) in a GCSE Science subject
    • Any candidate who has GCSEs from a foreign institution must obtain a NARIC statement to show compatability
    • Equivalency testing will need to take place if candidates have not successfuly achieved GCSE C (4) in English, mathematics and Science, if applicable
  • Degree
    • All candidates must hold a first degree or equivalent qualification (2:2 or above) granted by a United Kingdom institution or an equivalent degree or other qualification granted by a foreign institution
    • Any candidate who has a degree from a foreign institution must obtain a NARIC statement to show compatability: a degree transcript will also be required.
  • Suitability
    • ​All candidates must take part in a rigorous selection process to assess their:-
      • suitability to teach
      • ability to demonstrate meeting all of the Teachers' Standards without the need for any further training
    • Candidates must pass a health and physical capacity to teach
    • Candidates must provide evidence of clearing an enhanced DBS clearance (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
  • Professional Skills Tests
    • All candidates must have passed the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy prior to entry
  • School Teaching Experience
    • All candidates must have taught in at least two schools, early years or further educational settings
    • All candidates need to demonstrate sufficient breadth and variety of experience in schools or other settings and must show that they are meeting the Teachers' Standards by:
      • having taught children and young people from different backgrounds, across the ability range in their chosen age ranges
      • having gained experience of different approaches to teaching and learning and to school organisation and management
      • having taught as an unqualified teacher for a minimum of two years and over two key stages
      • having full teaching responsibility for their clasess including planning, monitoring and assessment
      • Overseas employment may still be eligible, but work as a TA, Supply Teacher or experience as part of another training course is not deemed to be sufficient
  • All candidates need to be currently employed by a school who is willing and able to support them through the 12 week assessment window. This includes being able to provide them with a mentor, professional tutor and the equivalent of an NQT’s timetable.

The fee for the Assessment Only Route is £2,500, which can be funded by either the applicant or the employing school or part funded by both.

A non-refundable fee of £125 is required to cover the administration and initial QTS evidence audit.  If successfully accepted onto the course this amount will be deducted from the full cost fee.
